A Message from the Sanctuary of Saint Philomena, Feast of the Epiphany 2014

We desire like our Mother Mary to ponder in our hearts the occurrences surrounding our Lord’s birth. To help us in our pondering we draw fruit from remembering the meaning of Epiphany. The word means a manifestation or an appearance. God had already manifested himself to Abraham, Jacob, Moses, and the prophets, but not by becoming human. In the life of Jesus other epiphanies occurred at the baptism of Jesus and the wedding feast at Cana. At the parousia another epiphany will occur. When Jesus comes again at the end of time, he will appear in the fullness of his beauty. Christ will then bestow his beatitude on the people who are saved.

Now we celebrate Jesus Christ manifested as the Savior of all nations along with God’s Chosen People. In this Epiphany Jesus Christ appears as the light for all peoples represented by the magi. They followed the star to Bethlehem, traveling from their own lands to the land of Judah and the City of David. Upon finding the King, gifts were exchanged. Emmanuel, the Son of God, Jesus gave the gift of salvation. All peoples will be reconciled to the Father through the life, death, and resurrection of His Son. The magi offered gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh, as they gave themselves by prostrating before Jesus in homage.

By pondering this Epiphany two lessons manifest themselves to us. Various lands of our lives, regions of our hearts remain in darkness, covered by clouds. Christ the King, the power and wisdom of God, wants to appear in any darkness of our lives. Within our whole being Christ wants his star to shine the light of Truth and Love. Amidst our sinfulness we desire another Epiphany – the manifestation of the merciful Jesus in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

The second lesson manifested rises like the star, inviting us to be shining stars. Obedient to the Lord of creation, the star led the magi to Christ. As the revealed Word permeates our lives, as we live the Light of Truth with the fire of His Love, we become shining stars by our obedience. The obedience of Jesus to his Father’s will make him the Light of the world. We become children of the light by leading others to Christ as we obediently and lovingly live the truth of Church faith and morals. On the Feast of the Epiphany may the prayers of St. Philomena encourage us to live as shining stars.
