Dear Family of Saint Philomena
I greet you on this Catholic Feast Day for Pope Saint Pius X - the 259th pope of the Catholic Church - born in Venice on June 2, 1835, died this day in 1914 and on May 29, 1954 was canonized. In the twentieth century, Pope Saint Pius X continued a strong papal tradition of veneration of Saint Philomena. In 1905, on the occasion of the centenary of her arrival in Mugnano, he sent his gold ring to adorn the image of Saint Philomena over her tomb. That same year he beatified the Curé of Ars (Saint John Vianney) who had such a primordial devotion to Saint Philomena.
Pope Saint Pius X was also a great advocate of wearing the Cord of Saint Philomena and declared,
“all the decisions and declarations of his predecessors regarding Saint Philomena should in no way be altered.”
With this act he perpetuated devotion to Saint Philomena for all times.
On 15 January 1912, Pope Pius X renewed his blessing to the Work of Saint Philomena with the following touching words:
“For the beloved members of the Archconfraternity of Saint Philomena and of the Blessed J. M. Vianney, with the fervent wish that . . . our Lord will be prodigal with his greatest graces for all, We cordially send the Apostolic Blessing”.
On 21 May 1912, Pope Saint Pius X promoted the venerable Archconfraternity of Saint Philomena to Universal Archconfraternity. This promotion authoritatively and definitely affirmed the devotion of Saint Philomena. Through Apostolic Brief “Pias Fidelium Societates”, he clearly explained:
“We decree that the following scripture shall be stable, valid and effective, now and always and that it shall receive and obtain its full and whole effects, and so it has to be regularly judged and defined, and if it proceeds in any other way, it will be null and without any value, whatever the authority…”.
To this day public veneration of Saint Philomena continues with the full approval of the Holy See and the diocese of Nola, in which the Mugnano shrine of Saint Philomena is located.
Pope Saint Pius X inaugurated a liturgical renewal and restored the concept of frequent communion from childhood. He waged war against the heresy and evils of Modernism, gave great impetus to biblical studies, and brought about the codification of Canon Law. His overriding concern was to renew all things in Chrst.
From Pope Saint Pius X we learn again that "the folly of the Cross", simplicity of life, and humility of heart are still the highest forms of wisdom and the indispensable conditions of a perfect Christian life, for they are the very source of all apostolic fruitfulness. His last will and testament contains this sentence: "I was born poor, I have lived in poverty, and I wish to die poor."
Sending you a special blessing of Saint Philomena

Support the Sanctuary of Saint Philomena
The Sanctuary of Saint Philomena is not a parish Church. We do not have parishioners who support this place of worship on a weekly basis. We are completely dependent on the love and generosity of you, the world-wide devotees, to keep the doors of the earthly home of Saint Philomena open.
We pray at the Sanctuary for the devotees of Saint Philomena to recognize and provide the means to pay our monthly utilities of gas and electricity. We also pray for the means to install a lift at the Sanctuary to enable physically challenged pilgrims to experience the entire home of their beloved Saint.
In order to ensure the Sanctuary is able to keep our doors open to you and to continue to offer God continual praise and to be the focal point through which our prayers are received by Saint Philomena and interceded for before God at the Sanctuary, you may donate in the following ways:
